The Composer Slam is a fun and educational Fringe Event of the Bellingen Fine Music Festival. It is part of the Festival “Music-By-Youth Project” and is presented by Camp Creative.
For the Slam, student composers either arrange to have their work performed or alternatively bring their laptop with a notation program file of the score of their composition to be played.
The Slam will be held in the Bellingen Uniting Church Worship Centre in August. Family and friends of participants are welcome to attend. Music Festival patrons will also be invited to attend.
The following Encouragement Awards will be made at the conclusion of the Slam: $100 for the best electronic music and $50 for the runner up; $100 for the best fully scored music and $50 for the runner up. The Music Festival may elect to use a work for promotion of the festival if agreed with the participant submitting the work. All entrants will receive a complimentary student weekend pass to the Festival 26-29 Sep.
Entrants. The Slam is for Secondary School student composers.
Each composer can enter only one composition. The compositions can be any genre/style
(classical, jazz, rock, song, etc) and must not exceed five minutes in
performance time. The compositions can be
performed solo or by an ensemble of up to a maximum of six players (which can
include adults), or alternatively a composer can bring a laptop with a computer
program/file (e.g. Sibelius, MuseScore, GarageBand) of their composition to be
played, in which case the score will be displayed on a big screen. A piano will be available for use.
Adjudicators. Paul Jarman will be the adjudicator.
Paul Jarman is a widely acclaimed Australian composer, performer, musical director and educator. He is most well known as a lyricist and composer of choral music, a world music multi instrumentalist, and a facilitator of community inspired collaborations.
